Finding Airline Deals - Random Post

As summer approaches, I have been scouring the web trying to find the cheapest tickets for some of the travel I plan to do. My travel bug does not exactly match with my college budget, so finding the cheapest flights has become kind of a game for me. Who knew flights to Australia and Japan were so expensive?! Some of my favorite ways of doing this are looking at sites like Expedia, which search a variety of airlines to find the best option for your budget, schedule, and airline preferences (if you are trying to acquire miles). Unfortunately, the obvious tradeoff I have found with the less expensive flights is convenience and comfort. Less expensive flights often means more stopovers and fewer in-flight amenities.
While many of my fellow travelers, particularly some of my classmates in WBB, find the actual commuting as much a part of the travel experience as being in a new place, I do not mind giving up some of the luxuries for a better deal. At one time, when my family lived as expats in Hong Kong, we often enjoyed lounge access and business class seats on premier airlines like Cathay Pacific where you felt as if your flight experience rivaled a spa getaway. Now, I will only buy guest passes to airport lounges on long layovers or if I absolutely need to take a shower. However, the draw of the quiet lounge, a buffet of food, and an open bar are sometimes hard to pass up during an exhausting day of travel. Instead of relying on the stately benefits of an airline lounge or a more expensive airline, I try to prepare in other ways to entertain myself during a layover and during a flight. Besides attempting to sleep, I ensure that my laptop is loaded up with all of my favorite movies and TV shows and that I have an engaging book with me. What are some of the ways that you keep yourself entertained when traveling? How important are additional services and amenities to you in an airport or on a flight?

  1. Thanks for providing us some insight on this. I've used the same sights in the past for trips and tried to look for good deals as well, but it's hard internationally! Always remember to download Netflix before going ha

  2. Hi Sara, I am also looking at airline deals on line to go back to China this summer and I love your insights on this issue. I can totally relate your feelings about being tired and jetlagged from a 14 hour flight and online movies are always my best company during my trip up in the sky!

  3. I always try to look for the best deal when I am flying and I will give some perks for a cheaper flight. For me to get through those cheap flight I bring my computer fully loaded with new movies and hopefully that last long enough to get through the whole flight.

  4. I love flying and traveling as you probably know! One of the things I try to do when I travel is getting a good night of sleep and get to the airport rested, wear comfortable clothes, never drink caffeine before a flight and most of the times eat something in the airport in order to avoid the terrible airplane food. I also suggest you to stick with one airline or alliance and try to travel always with them so you will upgrade your status and get all the benefits you talked about for free.

  5. Hey Sarah,

It was a great read! It is so relatable, as I know how hard it is to find good airline deals. Trying to do some travelling before i graduate has been a struggle. But I usually use skyscanner or google flights to get an idea on flight prices, while I keep myself entertained by usually downloading songs on my spotify for long flights or trying to sleep it off (using a neck pillow). Great tips and advice Sarah!

  6. Hey Sarah - I can definitely relate to this. Practically every weekend this semester I have been out of town and it hasn't exactly come at a cheap price. However - I did come across this app called "Hopper" that has been pretty reliable in comparing and finding the best deals on flights. Not sure if it works on international flights, but worth checking out!
