Eagle Rock Brewery Women's Beer Forum

Last Wednesday, I attended the Women's Beer Forum at Eagle Rock Brewery in Los Angeles with Anna. We were both initially hesitant about attending the forum, as we both felt we knew little about the beer industry and were unsure if we would be accepted into this group of women who seemed so passionate about it. However, I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived, and several other women also attending the forum greeted us excitedly as we were checking in. All of a sudden, I realized the event was not something intended to be intimidating but rather a completely non-pretentious, fun social gathering.
The forum revolved around tasting a flight of four different beers that had been imported from all corners of the United States. There was a golden lager from Staten Island, NY, a pale ale from Tallahassee, FL, a blonde selection from San Diego, and an IPA from Cincinnati, OH. In between beers, the leader of the forum, Ting, would talk about different topics in the industry. This was for the purpose of educating women who have been historically closed off to this information, as beer has always been a man's drink. Despite not knowing much of the terminology, I thought the concept was very cool in that the forum was trying to shift the gendered conversation about beer. I also found the pairing with cheese to be quite enjoyable, as it reminded me a lot of wine tasting, which I would say is a more traditional thing for women to participate in.
Overall, I really enjoyed going to the forum and recommend that other women who are interested in learning more about beer to check it out. I also think this would be a great place to go if you're a woman who does not think she likes beer but is willing to be proven wrong. There's also a very small bar to have a drink after the forum and talk with the bartenders there to learn more if time permits.
