A World We Dare to Imagine

To make the world a better place is no easy feat. In my opinion, any first step to improving our world would take an approach that surely anyone could benefit from. I believe that one of the primary things holding back our world from being the greatest it can be is the prevalence of severe mental health issues that are left untreated and unaddressed, particularly in the United States. This is without a doubt a result of a culture promotes stress and encourages perfections, leaving people to be guarded in discussing their personal feelings. This leads to the depression and anxiety that plagues are society. One of the happiest places I've ever had the fortune of traveling to was Spain. Much like their Italian neighbors, the Spanish are endlessly passionate and open in speaking about their emotions. No wonder they are famous four their three hour long meals and expressive art of Picasso, DalĂ, and many many others.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that in a first attempt to make the world a better place, my primary objective would be to make people less stressed. In doing this, I would first have to establish that being happy, as opposed to hyper stressed, should be praised. Next, I would just have people talk to each other. Isolation and egocentrism are at the very route of this problem, and genuine human connection can do a lot to heal these internal battles we face with ourselves and the world. Being with others will also make people more open and willing to share their thoughts and opinions thereby decreasing stress. Finally, I would establish more infrastructure to help individuals work through their mental health problems. I think we can learn a lot from the Spanish on how to make the world a better place, but I guess what I have learned from them is that society should have more focus on being happy. This seems so obvious but is hardly a current goal in many places. This is how we can start to make it one.

  1. Hey Sarah nice concept! I think the next steps would be partnering with professionals and those in the psychology as well as reaching out to cultural experts of Spain to try and gain a better understanding. Mental health is a tough issue to tackle and I think that in order to best deal with it you'll need to find professionals that understand it! They could help guide you to the best ways of structuring your org.

  2. I think everyone can agree they've felt stressed out at one point. Finding a method to calm stress is always a difficult task so dedicating resources to finding the most effective means for relieving stress would be worthwhile for all involved. I also think that people need to change their mindset and embrace being happy instead of feeling guilty about their success, luck, etc...

  3. This would be a great thing to happen, but it will be hard to find the right way to do this. I never really thought about how we can take from other cultures and there ways to de-stress. Also, college campuses would be a great place to implement this.

  4. Hey Sarah,

I think you bring up very good points about mental health and how vital it is in the world. I agree with you that it needs to be more of a focus and people's happiness should be something we should strive to focus on! I think having psychology become of more importance should help and we should definitely learn from the Spanish way of living!
